The Clicquot House was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron, a banker and textile merchant. In 1798 his son Fran├žois joined the business with the ambition of making his own Champagne, but he died in 1805 and it was his widow, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin, aged 27, who took the reins of the company and turned it into one of Champagne's most successful houses.
